AISI1020 Low Carbon and Tensile Steel Physical Properties

AISI 1020 Low Carbon and Tensile Steel has high machinability, high strength, high ductility and good weld ability. It is normally used in turned and polished or cold drawn condition. 1020 Low Carbon steel is also used in a variety of applications due to its cold drawn or turned and polished finish property.

The chemical composition of AISI 1020 steel is:

Element
Content
Carbon, C
0.17 - 0.230 %
Iron, Fe
99.08 - 99.53 %
Manganese, Mn
0.30 - 0.60 %
Phosphorous, P
≤ 0.040 %
Sulfur, S
≤ 0.050 %
AISI1020 Steel Machinability
1020Tensile Steel Machinability is good at 65% compared to 1112 carbon steel as 100% baseline.
1020 Low Carbon Steel Weld ability
AISI 1020 can be welded by performing the most common welding processes. It has been suggested that the welding process should not be performed in heat treated or carburized condition.
AISI1020 Low Carbon Steel Heat Treatment

1020 may be hardened by heating to 1500 - 1600 F and then water quenching. The cost of doing any heat treatment to such a low carbon steel often precludes doing so for the modest return in mechanical properties obtained.
